The open road beckons—time to heed its call with your electric vehicle. Modern electric vehicles (EVs) are more powerful than ever and ready to go the distance, making for an energy-efficient journey. Thanks to significant advancements in battery technology and the expansion of public charging infrastructure worldwide, road trips are now an accessible option for all electric car drivers. Ready to hit the road? This article provides essential tips to prepare for a truly electrifying summer road trip.

Vehicle check.

Before you do anything, ensure your EV is in tip-top condition to handle a long trek. Check your tires, brakes, lights, and, most importantly, your battery. You want a battery that will last and that will be predictable regarding range and how it responds to changes in temperature. Consider the vehicle’s range and whether or not it is built for DC charging (Level 3), as that will determine whether you spend a few minutes in a public charging station or a few hours. You want to make sure your tires are well inflated so they may have the best traction and respond to your brakes properly.

Map it out.

Whether you rely on GPS or a traditional map, be sure to research EV-friendly destinations along your route. When planning your stops, factor in charging times, even if your vehicle supports fast charging. Apps such as Ivy Charging Network 2.0, PlugShare, and ChargeHub can help you locate charging stations. It’s always wise to have multiple options to ensure you’re covered.

Pack it up.

When packing for your trip, be mindful of weight and distribution. Excess weight can reduce your vehicle’s range, and an unevenly loaded trunk can impact handling. It’s a balancing act between your EV’s capabilities and what you want to bring along. Aim to pack efficiently and leave some extra space in the back. Additionally, air resistance can impact your range, so if you’re considering a roof rack, opt for an aerodynamic design.

Practice efficient driving.

EVs are machines, and like all machines, there’s an optimal way to handle them to maximize efficiency. Like a runner going the distance, it’s all about energy use and strategy. Though your battery is prepared to handle long distances regardless of driving style, these tips will help you make the most out of your technology. First, abrupt acceleration is more energy-demanding than gradually increasing your speed. This also means keeping a steady speed whenever possible. Proper braking can also enhance your battery range; be sure to leave enough space between cars to make the most of smoother, regenerative braking. These factors, working alongside proper tire pressure and braking conditions, will take you the distance.

Consider the weather.

Extreme temperatures can affect battery efficiency. Fortunately, Canadian summers are excellent for EV battery life—just keep an eye out the farther North you go. The sweet spot is 15–45 degrees. In a country like Canada, where winter temperatures can be extreme, it’s crucial to account for potential temperature drops when calculating your EV’s range. Cold weather can strain the battery as it works to maintain optimal temperatures for both the vehicle and the driver.

Schedule stops and bring some backup.

As you map out your route, we recommend creating a schedule that includes meals, scenic visits, and battery charging stops. However airtight you consider your plan to be, we suggest you prepare some backup. This can mean additional stops in case your EV’s autonomy varies due to speed, weather, or any other factors. We also suggest bringing a Level 1 charger for emergencies. It may take a lot longer to charge your vehicle, but because it works with 120V, it’s an excellent ally for unexpected situations.

A great rule of thumb while planning your trip is to have a 20% range backup. Aim to reach your next charging station with plenty of charge left to make up for any detours, delays, and drops in vehicle range due to external factors.

Stay flexible.

A good road trip is mostly about mentality because the road can be unpredictable. You can plan ahead to handle unexpected factors, such as road conditions, traffic, roadwork, charging station availability, and more. Staying flexible means knowing that these events are out of your control and being prepared to switch it up on the fly without missing out on a good time. A backup can help overcome the unexpected, but even the best-prepared driver can only cover so much. Embrace the detours and be prepared to change your route.

Catch up with other drivers.

There are several communities and apps that connect EV owners and drivers. Staying connected with others can inform you about lesser-known charging stations and other tips for your plotted route. Learning from other drivers is an excellent way to hear from other users and customers about your intended stops, determine whether you really want to visit a certain location, and keep updated on accidents, blockages, and other forms of unexpected traffic.

Practice EV charging etiquette.

Ivy Charging Network is spread all over Ontario, and there are other options in other provinces that you are bound to find in your journey. As more people pick up their own EVs, charging stations may start seeing more visitors, resulting in longer lines and wait times. Here are a few etiquette tips to make the most out of your journey and help others do so as well.

  • Only park at a charging station if you’re charging. Move your vehicle when you’re done.
  • Watch time limits—those are set to ensure that charging is available.
  • Don’t unplug another vehicle while it is charging.
  • Inform the staff and other users about issues with chargers.
  • Take care of the station—properly wrap the cord and plug it back into the storage port.
  • Help out new EV drivers.

Setting off on a road trip and making the most out of your EV is now not only possible but can be truly enjoyable. As you’ve seen, it takes a few simple steps to make the most of your road trip while keeping you in charge of your vehicle’s range. As the days get warmer, people are more eager to get out and about, explore the province, and take in the sun. EV Revolution Show, hosted by Kenneth Bokor, wanted to highlight some of the solutions available to EV owners in the country and invited Ivy’s General Manager, Michael Kitchen, to learn more about Ivy’s public charging network as well as home charging solution.

Ivy’s goals.

The podcast started with Ivy’s General Manager, Michael Kitchen, answering questions and discussing how Ivy’s network spans over 150 Level 3 chargers and 30 Level 2 chargers all over Ontario. Michael explained that Ivy’s network extends “From Ottawa all the way down to Windsor, all the way up, to Kenora, Fort Frances in the northwest,” with the aim of ending range anxiety so EV owners in the province can freely travel the region. The topic then moved on to the ONroute network: 69 chargers over 20 locations on the major highways.

Ivy is always looking for convenient locations that are safe and easy to access, alongside amenities so customers can enjoy the 20–30 minute charge before they head off into adventure.

Range anxiety.

Whether it’s range anxiety or bladder anxiety, the host touched on how the current technology has allowed us to subvert expectations around EVs. Level 2 home chargers and EV batteries are now strong enough to give you all you need for your daily commute. EV networks have shown new electric drivers that range anxiety is not as fearsome once they start driving electric.

“If you look at various surveys or statistics, you’ll see that once people get an EV and particularly if they get a home charger, they realize that they don’t need as many public charging options as they might have initially assumed,” Michael Kitchen advises.

The Ivy Charging Network app.

This chat was a great platform to share the benefits of the Ivy Charging Network app because, as Kenneth mentioned, EV drivers should prepare for their road trip stops as much as possible. The Ivy app empowers drivers to look at the charging stations on their route and learn more about their status—whether chargers are available, in use, under maintenance and more. Ivy is also on PlugShare and Chargehub, which lets you communicate with the EV community more efficiently to spot chargers in the province. You can also locate Ivy chargers on your favourite navigation apps like Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze and most in-car navigation systems for added convenience.

The chat also covered the aim of interoperability so members of other networks, like Circuit Electrique, can find their charging stations without leaving their go-to app. The goal is to make road trip planning simpler for EV users.

On the subject of payments, the conversation also covered Ivy’s three main options:

  • The mobile app
  • An RFID card
  • The QR code to scan on each of Ivy’s chargers

Energy talk.

Michael and the host discussed energy delivery—and how it depends on location—and the network’s plug availability. The ONroute chargers can deliver up to 150 kW, while the other Level 3 chargers can deliver up 50, keeping up the standard. As for plugs, there’s always a CHAdeMO plug around for any EV that may need it, as well as CCS and Tesla-adapted connectors at all chargers within Ivy’s ONroute network. There’s always something available for any electric vehicle.

Customer support.

After discussing Ivy’s energy-based pricing, the subject turned to the 24-hour customer support line. Any user can call 1-800-301-1950 if they face any issues with their charging experience. Regardless, Ivy monitors their stations constantly, troubleshooting and replacing parts as necessary. The operations team proactively addresses issues to ensure seamless charging for everyone.

Home charging.

Kenneth then asked about Ivy’s turnkey home charging solution. The Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is now accepting applications until September 19, 2024. This federally funded initiative aims to support the deployment of level 2 and DC fast chargers across the country. But what is considered clean energy?

Clean energy is like the quiet champion of power generation. It pulls energy from various sources, such as hydro and nuclear, building a strong foundation for a brighter future. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) stands at the forefront of our bright future, where every kilowatt generated is a testament to their commitment to clean energy. Ten years ago, OPG delivered one of the world’s single-largest actions to combate climate change to date. In April 2014, the company burned its last piece of coal to generate power with the closure of its Thunder Bay Generating Station (GS), making Ontario the very first jurisdiction in North America to remove coal entirely from its electricity system. Today, Ontario has one of the cleanest energy grids in the entire world. Isn’t that amazing?

Additionally, projects like the Darlington Refurbishment underscore OPG’s commitment to low-carbon nuclear power, while its extensive hydroelectric operations harness natural resources for energy production. OPG is critical to Ontario’s existing power needs and propels the province into a sustainable future by advancing clean energy technologies and driving efforts for broader decarbonization.

Expanding capacity: Investments in Ontario’s nuclear future.

Nuclear power is a cornerstone of Ontario’s energy strategy, providing a substantial portion of the province’s electricity capable of generating power around the clock. OPG operates two nuclear facilities: the Darlington Nuclear GS and the Pickering Nuclear GS. Darlington GS, in particular, is undergoing a significant refurbishment project, ensuring its role as a provider of clean, safe, and reliable electricity for decades to come. This refurbishment extends the facility’s operational life and supports the province’s climate change goals by enabling the production of low-emission power.

Hydroelectricity is another key pillar of Ontario’s clean energy portfolio. With more than 60 hydroelectric stations across the province, OPG harnesses the power of water to generate electricity. These faculties vary in size and capacity, contributing significantly to the province’s renewable energy generation.

The importance of embracing clean energy and EVs.

Shifting towards clean energy and electric vehicles (EVs) is more than just an eco-friendly trend—it’s necessary. Here are some key reasons why this transformation is vital for our present and future world.

Can my house handle a level 2 EV charger?

In the past few years, as public charging stations become more popular, electric vehicle (EV) owners and drivers have started looking at their own homes as central charging hubs for their vehicles. The technology now allows nearly every home to charge an EV so as to not depend on your nearest public charger. Though there are three levels of EV charging, only two of them are viable for home installation and use. In this blog, we’ll explore whether your house can handle a home charging solution to help you make an informed decision.

Three levels of EV charging.

There are three levels of EV chargers, each one more powerful than the last but also with more power requirements. Level 1 chargers work with 120V, and they are the slower option, taking 11–20 hours to fill an empty battery completely. Level 2 chargers are closer to the standard. They work with 240V and can charge an empty battery in 3–8 hours. Level 3 is the fastest, but it requires Direct Current, which is unavailable in homes. Instead, let’s focus on Levels 1 and 2, as they are the realistic solutions to your home charging needs.

A Level 2 charger typically operates on a 240-volt circuit, which is similar to the electrical supply used by heavy-duty appliances like electric stoves or dryers. Though they are technically fit for any house, we encourage you to inspect your home’s setup with the help of a professional to determine its capability. Commonly, the first step is to assess your electrical panel’s capacity—the central hub that distributes electricity throughout your home. Here are some key factors to consider:

  1. Panel Capacity: Check the amp rating on your electrical panel. Most residential panels in Canada are rated for 100 or 200 amps. A 200-amp panel is typically sufficient for Level 2 charging, but a 100-amp panel may require an upgrade.
  2. Available Circuit Space: Determine if you have available circuit breaker slots in your electrical panel. A Level 2 charger typically requires a dedicated circuit, meaning it should not share the electrical load with other appliances or outlets.
  3. Load Calculation: Assess the overall electrical load in your home. Consider the power consumption of existing appliances, heating, and cooling systems. Ensure that adding a Level 2 charger won’t overload the panel and compromise safety.

Potential upgrades.

If your electrical panel is deemed inadequate for a Level 2 charger, there are several possible upgrades to consider:

  1. Installing a load-sharing device: A load-sharing device can be integrated into your electrical system to intelligently distribute power among various appliances and circuits, ensuring optimal usage and preventing overload situations. This technology allows for efficient management of electricity consumption, especially during peak demand periods, by prioritizing charging requirements and balancing the load across the available power sources.
  2. Panel Upgrade: Upgrading your electrical panel to a higher amp rating, such as from 100 to 200 amps, can provide the additional capacity required for Level 2 charging.
  3. Subpanel Installation: Installing a subpanel dedicated to the Level 2 charger can help distribute the electrical load more efficiently, minimizing the need for a full panel upgrade.
  4. Electrical Service Upgrade: In some cases, older homes may require a complete electrical service upgrade to meet the power demands of a Level 2 charger and other modern appliances.

Remember that if you decide to take on these upgrades yourself, they must be authorized by the Electrical Service Authority.

Understanding EV charging.

Before choosing an electric vehicle based on its maximum charging speed, two important concepts are essential to grasp – charging curve and charging peak. Let’s explore these terms below:

Charging curve

A charging curve is a graphical representation of how an electric vehicle’s battery undergoes charging over time. It shows the maximum charge your vehicle can get throughout the charging process.

Most EV drivers notice that their EV charges most optimally when the battery level is between 10% and 80%. However, charging slows when the battery level goes above 80%. This is because it has reached the battery’s maximum charge rate (around 80%) and gradually reduces as it nears full capacity.

Peak charging

One common misconception is that electric vehicles can reach their maximum charging speed at any time. For example, if your EV’s maximum charging speed is 200 kW, it’s easy to assume that every time you plug into a 200-kW public fast charger (L3) it will deliver that full capacity each time. However, it doesn’t always work that way. For example, let’s say that your EV is at 10% and you plug into a 250-kW unit. Your vehicle may quickly reach its maximum charging speed (200 kW), but eventually, it will slow down as the battery charges. It’s the gradual increase and decrease that creates the charging curve.

Keep charging curves in mind when you can prepare for long-distance journeys. You can decide on the ideal charging stops based on the average charging session length and amenities available nearby. External factors that may affect your charging speed.

Additionally, several other external factors may affect your charging speed:

State of charge (SoC)

State of charge, or SoC, refers to how full your battery is. The higher the SoC, the slower the charging speed. This is due to charging slowing down when the battery approaches its maximum capacity to avoid overcharging and potentially causing battery damage. The recommended approach is to keep your EV’s battery between 20% and 80% and only charge beyond this when it is necessary.

Battery temperature

Charging speed can also be affected by extreme temperatures limiting charging efficiency and sometimes even causing damage to your battery. During hot summer months, park your EV in a shady area or in a garage to help keep the battery cool. During the winter, it is best to charge right away while your EV is warm or use a pre-conditioning tool on your EV’s app to warm up your vehicle before charging.

Other electrical loads

If you’re using electrical loads in your EV while charging such as air conditioning, heating or entertainment systems, some of your charging power may be diverted to power these loads which can slow down your charging speed.
